June 20, 2023

The GNYHA/United Hospital Fund (UHF) Clinical Quality Fellowship Program (CQFP) recently graduated its 13th class. Twenty-nine fellows completed the 15-month program developed by GNYHA and UHF to identify and educate the region’s next generation of quality improvement (QI) leaders. The class comprised 20 physicians, eight nurse professionals, and one physician assistant.

The fellows came from 25 GNYHA member institutions, plus NYC Health + Hospitals/Correctional Health Services and NYC Health + Hospitals Central Office. The clinical specialty areas represented included pediatrics, emergency services, palliative care, psychiatry, anesthesiology, maternal/fetal medicine, internal medicine, nurse management, and pulmonary/critical care.

The fellowship program includes both didactic and interactive learning, and fellows are required to lead a QI capstone project under the guidance of an expert mentor. Notable capstone projects selected for presentation at the culminating ceremony included “Reducing the Rate of Iatrogenic Hypoglycemia of Admitted Patients at an Academic Teaching Hospital” by Erwin Wang, MD, MHA, NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn; “Reduction of the ‘Left Without Being Seen’ Percentage in the Emergency Department” by Shellyann Sharpe, MD, NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx; and “A Three-Pronged Approach to Managing Oral Medications in the Home Care Setting” by Jenna Blind, DNP, RN, CPHQ, NYU Langone Hospital-Long Island.
