GNYHA Patient Safety Survey Workshop Highlights Results Data

August 7, 2023

GNYHA’s recent “Understanding Your Data” workshop focused on its 2023 Spring Patient Safety Culture Initiative. Dina Shapiro-Luft, PhD, GNYHA’s Senior Director, Survey Research, helped members better understand how patient safety culture results are calculated, the different types and attributes of the results data, and how to interpret and compare the results data to certain benchmarks.

Key sections and components of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) Surveys on Patient Safety Culture™ (SOPS®) Hospital Survey 2.0 (HSOPS 2.0), including the core module, supplemental items, and respondent characteristics were explained. Dr. Shapiro-Luft detailed data collection and analysis, including types of questions used in the survey, how the survey ensures accuracy and consistency, and the data cleaning process that was deployed. She also reviewed the types of data results and highlighted national, regional, and organizational benchmarks, noting that the benchmarks are aggregated data from various health care facilities representing the average of different dimensions of patient safety culture. In addition, Dr. Shapiro-Luft noted areas where GNYHA provides benchmarking that AHRQ does not, a value-added service for members that use GNYHA to administer the survey to their hospital staff.

GNYHA’s Michael Johnston, Assistant Vice President, Health Informatics, gave an online demonstration of GNYHA’s Patient Safety Culture Initiative web portal and online reports. He demonstrated how participating hospitals can access their online reports, the various reports available, and how to navigate the different components of the website. Mr. Johnston also highlighted technical assistance that GNYHA provides to participating members.

Since 2021, GNYHA has successfully administered the AHRQ SOPS® HSOPS 2.0 for over 30 member hospitals.
