Surprise Billing/Good Faith Estimates

The No Surprises Act (NSA) was designed in large part to protect consumers from surprise medical bills that occur when a hospital is out-of-network (OON) or when OON physicians provide services at in-network hospitals. It also includes a process for resolving payment disputes in surprise bill situations and requires that providers give patients Good Faith Estimates of what their out-of-pocket costs will be for all scheduled services. New York State has laws similar to the NSA that govern surprise billing and dispute resolution. GNYHA is a strong advocate for surprise billing rules that are fair to hospitals and provides extensive member resources on both the Federal and New York laws and regulations.
