Medicare pays teaching hospitals its share of direct graduate medical education (DGME) and indirect medical education (IME) costs for training physicians. In order to receive Medicare GME reimbursement, teaching hospitals must comply with a complex set of rules on the approval of residency training and the counting of resident time.
