DOH Issues DAL on Nursing Home Preparation for Heat Events and Power Outages; Additional Heat Event Resources

June 22, 2021

The New York State Department of Health (DOH) recently issued a “Dear Administrator Letter (DAL)” (attached) to remind nursing home administrators of the importance of taking precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses in their residents and staff.

In anticipation of summer heat events and storms, which can result in electrical power outages, DOH’s DAL also highlights the need to maintain generators and ensure that staff are trained on procedures around generator use.

GNYHA would like to take this opportunity to share the following heat event resources:

  • New York City Emergency Management developed a presentation/briefing (attached) that includes the National Weather Service’s seasonal outlook; information from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; and news and updates on heat-related health hazards, electric utility preparedness, and City heat plans and adaptations
  • The National Weather Service maintains an excessive heat webpage that provides additional details on heat-related advisories, watches, and warnings

Coastal Storm Season

GNYHA urges all continuing care members to begin preparations for the 2021 Coastal Storm Season. We will provide relevant updates and key coastal storm resources in a separate bulletin in the coming weeks.
