Training Residents on High-Quality Referral Communications and eConsults in the Ambulatory Setting is a curriculum guide for teaching hospital faculty that provides strategies for training residents on enhanced referrals and electronic consultations (eConsults). This resource was developed in partnership with the Association of American Medical Colleges Project CORE: Coordinating Optimal Referral Experiences. The curriculum guide focuses on the ambulatory clinical environment, which increasingly relies on provider communication through the electronic health record (EHR).
Training Residents on High-Quality Referral Communications and eConsults in the Ambulatory Setting covers three areas:
- General provider-to-provider communication
- High-quality referral and eConsult communication
- Effective co-management of shared patients
Each area includes learning objectives, sample learning progressions for learner assessment, and teaching tips. The curriculum guide also includes information on the Accreditation Council for GME’s Common Program Requirements associated with each area.
