Individuals Who Need to Receive Their Second Dose at a Different Location Than Their First Dose

April 27, 2021

The New York State Department of Health issued updated guidance (attached) that addresses circumstances where individuals need to receive their second dose at a different location than their first dose. The guidance reports that the provider administering the first dose, not the individual, is responsible for locating an appropriate second-dose appointment.

The guidance notes that for individuals who received their first vaccine dose outside of New York State there will be no record of the first dose in the New York State Immunization Information System (NYSIIS) or the Citywide Immunization Registry (CIR). In this case, the guidance states that “[p]roviders administering a second dose should either enter the first dose in NYSIIS/CIR as part of the historical record using data listed on the individual’s COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card or advise the patient that they should ask their primary care provider to enter their first dose into NYSIIS/CIR so the state has a full record of both doses of COVID-19 vaccine.”
