GNYHA has long supported organ donation and efforts to increase donors in New York. Despite being one of the nation’s preeminent health care destinations and having a number of world-class transplant centers, New York ranks among the lowest of enrolled donors.
New York State debuted its new online organ donor registry last fall, making it much easier for New Yorkers to enroll. The GNYHA-1199 SEIU Healthcare Education Project and LiveOnNY, the region’s organ procurement organization, ran a digital ad campaign featuring Governor Andrew Cuomo across the State to publicize the New York Donate Life Registry. As a result, New York’s Registry has seen an increase of nearly one million newly enrolled donors, bringing the total to over five million donors.
April is National Donate Life month, and GNYHA continues to encourage New Yorkers to enroll through the registry. For more information on GNYHA’s organ donation initiatives, please contact Lorraine Ryan. To enroll as an organ donor, visit https://donatelife.ny.gov/.
