On September 28, 2008, GNYHA hosted the second annual “Where to Practice” Open House. The event—cosponsored with Iroquois Healthcare Alliance, HANYS, WNYHA, the Upstate New York Physician Recruiters Network, and the New York State Department of Health (DOH)—provided hospital physician recruiters from upstate New York the opportunity to network with nearly 150 physician residents looking for practice opportunities. The event aims to address upstate physician shortages by connecting hospitals with candidates from downstate teaching hospital residency programs.
At this year’s event, recruiters representing nearly 30 upstate hospitals attended to discuss both practice options and lifestyle features of their communities, such as schools, real estate, and attractions. In addition to the hospital exhibits, Caleb Wistar and Praphakar ‘Raj’ Rajupet, both from DOH’s Workforce Development Unit, gave presentations on a number of physician-related programs, including loan forgiveness, J-1 visa waivers, and the new Doctors Across New York program. Reporters from the New York Times and NY1 also covered the event.
